Printing barcodes
Barcodes can be printed by a variety of means, the most common are...
Lithographic or Flexographic traditional printing. This by far the most common way of printing barcodes for retail use. Preproduced artwork is made into a plate which is used to print thousands or even millions of copies of the artwork.
Laser or Inkjet printing. For in house or flexible label printing either of these technologies can be used. care should be taken if using inkjet printing to make sure that ink spread on the paper used is not that great that the barcode becomes unreadable.
Thermal transfer or Direct Thermal printing. This utilizes a special kind of printer which uses heat to produce and image on the label. In a thermal transfer printer a wax or resin ribbon is used to produce a permanent image on the label. In a direct thermal printer special heat sensitive labels are used and the image is not permanent and may turn black or fade over time.
